What Is a Roof Ridge?

The ridge is the horizontal line along the very top of a pitched roof where the two slopes meet. It is capped with ridge tiles that keep water and wind out of the roof. How those ridge tiles are fixed — the ridge system — makes a huge difference to how long your roof lasts and how much maintenance it needs.

Below are the main systems we work with. If you are not sure which is right for your property, our team will happily advise you free of charge.

Modern mechanically fixed dry ridge system along a tiled roof apex

Dry Ridge System

A modern, mechanically fixed system where each ridge tile is screwed to the roof through a batten and sealed with a breathable ridge roll — no mortar required.

Best for long-term durability and virtually maintenance-free roofs.

Advantages

  • No mortar to crack, crumble or wash out
  • Complies with current BS 5534 fixing standards
  • Allows the roof to breathe, reducing condensation
  • Typically comes with a 10–15 year guarantee
  • Withstands high winds and driving rain

Things to Consider

  • Higher upfront cost than mortar
  • Slightly more visible fixings on some profiles

Mortar-Bedded Ridge

The traditional method, where ridge tiles are bedded onto a sand-and-cement mortar. Modern best practice also mechanically fixes each tile for extra security.

Best for heritage properties and matching an existing traditional finish.

Advantages

  • Traditional appearance, ideal for period homes
  • Lower initial cost
  • Well suited to conservation areas

Things to Consider

  • Mortar eventually cracks and needs re-pointing
  • Requires ongoing maintenance over time
  • Mortar alone no longer meets BS 5534 — tiles must also be fixed
Dry verge system capping the gable edge of a tiled roof

Dry Verge System

Interlocking caps that mechanically fix the tiles along the gable (verge) edge of the roof, replacing mortar at the sides in the same way dry ridge does at the apex.

Best paired with a dry ridge for a fully mortar-free, low-maintenance roof.

Advantages

  • Neat, uniform gable finish
  • Stops birds and pests nesting under tiles
  • No mortar to fail at the exposed verge
  • Long manufacturer guarantees

Things to Consider

  • Adds to the overall cost
  • Colour must be matched to the tiles

Ridge Tile Profiles

Ridge tiles come in several profiles to match your roof and tiles. We supply and fit them all in clay and concrete, colour-matched to your roof.

Half-Round

The classic rounded ridge tile, common on both clay and concrete roofs.

Angular / V-Ridge

A crisp angular profile that suits modern interlocking tiles.

Universal Angle

Adjustable to different roof pitches for a precise fit.

Third-Round & Hip

Used on hipped roofs and where a lower-profile ridge is preferred.

Why the Ridge System Matters

A failed ridge is one of the most common causes of roof leaks and storm damage. Getting it right protects the whole roof.

Fixed to BS 5534

Since 2014, ridge and hip tiles must be mechanically fixed — not just bedded in mortar. We install every ridge to the current British Standard.

Built to Last

A correctly installed dry ridge can outlast mortar by decades, with no re-pointing and far less risk of tiles working loose.

Repairs & Upgrades

Loose or missing ridge tiles are a common cause of leaks. We repair failing mortar ridges and upgrade older roofs to modern dry systems.
